EXHIBITION > ‘SCORE FOR COMMUNITY LIVING’
Every good community needs a library, a chapel, a brothel, a graveyard, a disturbance...
Painstakingly made with balsa wood, plasticine, string and masking tape, this little community feels like a ghost town.
There are many an abandoned scenario throughout the structures, and oddly, there are no doors for entering or exiting.
This project is from quite a while back, but it’s a bit of a fave. It was exhibited in a solo show in Melbourne, and a group show in Sydney.
The images were transferred from slide film, so the detail is poor, but hopefully you get an idea.
1. Entrance - room for advertising opportunities - a train line ends, bullet holes scatter the billboards, drive on thru with Johnny Cash playing loud
2. Detention - room for solitary exchanges - one chair inside a room with no doors, one chair aligned directly opposite on the outside, they share a table that passes through the wall, visiting hours only, whispers & plans - all precautions are taken
3. Brothel - room for nocturnal gatherings - a reception room with full range of adult mags, pole dancing & retreating serpent tails, peep rooms with seating for classic positioning
4. Library - room for manic investigations - books line every shelf, many are carelessly removed in haste, then piled around a chair, (no doubt an important chapter to be found)
5. Recreation - room for rent: hours 12 til 12 - stairs climb the outer wall, a rope with soft rounded ends, chairs pushed corner bound, any theatrical engagement is welcome
6. Cinema - room for violent tendencies - yes, there are guns, loaded and placed, and seating for a private few, pow
7. Chapel - room for evidence of intolerent disturbances - pews are skewed & overturned, a frenzied exit
8. Cemetery - room for gatherings & offerings - unidentifiable pliable piles amongst the headstones, all else in tact
9. Piazza - room for uneasy positioning - dead birds on their backs, some lovely bricking, a good place for a quick 1, 2
10. Pit - room for open air flirtations - kinda climb up & climb in, it's cosey, for knee to knee engagements, (but there are piles here too)
